Putzgers Historischer Schul-Atlas, 1901

Deze atlas is genoemd naar Friedrich Wilhelm Putzger, auteur van de eerste 16 edities (1877-1890). Vanaf 1888 was Alfred Baldamus (mede-)auteur, vanaf 1899 in samenwerking met Ernst Schwabe. Daarbij was Baldamus verantwoordelijk voor de kaarten over de Middeleeuwen en de Nieuwe Tijd, en Schwabe voor de kaarten over de Oudheid.
Naast deze atlas was tussen 1889 en 1913 een eenvoudiger historische atlas leverbaar met als titel "Velhagen & Klasings Kleiner Geschichtsatlas". Auteur daarvan was weer Friedrich Wilhelm Putzger. Details zijn te vinden bij de beschrijving van de 3e druk (1900) van die atlas.
Dit is de laatste uitgave met een 'klassieke' band. Vanaf de 26e (1902) tot en met de 43e druk (1922) heeft de atlas een Jugendstil-band. Zie bijvoorbeeld de 35e druk (1911).

Band

De atlas heeft een band van bruin 'calico' (gedrukt katoen) met afmetingen 17,5 × 26 cm (B × H). Op de voorkant staat de titel binnen een decoratief gepreegd kader; buiten het kader staat de prijs: 2,30 mark voor de niet-gebonden uitgave en 3 mark voor de gebonden uitgave. De kaarten zijn gevouwen ingebonden.

Op het schutblad voorin staan enkele recensies van de atlas en een advertentie voor de reeks wandkaarten van Alfred Baldamus. Achterin staat een advertentie voor de twee versies van de schoolatlas van R. Lehmann en W. Petzold, ook uitgegeven door Velhagen & Klasing, in de periode 1897-1912.

Inhoud

De atlas heeft een titelpagina met op de achterkant de namen van de drukkerij van het kaartendeel (Körner & Sohn, Leipzig) en van het tekstdeel (W. Drugulin, Leipzig). Daarna komen vier bladzijden met de inhoudsopgave, ruim twee bladzijden met het voorwoord, met een uitgebreide bronvermelding, en acht bladzijden met toelichting bij de kaarten.

Het kaartendeel bevat 40 kaartbladen met, volgens de titelpagina, 234 hoofd- en bijkaarten. De kaartbladen zijn genummerd 1-40. Vaak zijn ook de buitenkanten van de kaartbladen gebruikt. Zo staat bijvoorbeeld op de 'voorkant' van blad 9 de kaart 9a, en op de 'achterkant' kaart 9b. De kaartbladen bevatten een of meer hoofdkaarten en meestal veel bijkaarten. De eerste 12 bladen bevatten kaarten over de Oudheid. Op de overige 28 bladen staan kaarten over de Middeleeuwen en de Nieuwe Tijd, met ook kaarten van enkele delen van Duitsland. Sommige bladen zijn zo ingebonden dat ze met twee tegelijk uit te vouwen zijn waardoor een 'dubbel' kaartblad ontstaat.

De kaarten zijn vervaardigd in lithografie en afgedrukt in zinkdruk. Hierdoor was kleurendruk vrij eenvoudig te realiseren en kon in grote oplagen worden gedrukt. Er is gebruik gemaakt van vlakkleur en randkleur om de staatkundige indeling aan te geven. In de bovenmarge staan nummer en naam van de kaart.

Vergelijking met eerdere uitgaven

Vanaf deze 25e druk zijn ook de achterkanten van de kaartbladen gebruikt. Daardoor kon de atlas veel meer (bij)kaarten bevatten zonder dikker en zwaarder te worden. Zie ook het voorwoord.

Bij vergelijking van de kaarten van de 25e en de 24e druk zijn de volgende verschillen te zien.

Het aantal kaartbladen is toegenomen van 39 tot 40. De kaart van het Ottomaanse Rijk en Noord-Amerika in de 24e druk (Nº 31) is vervangen door twee aparte kaarten, van het Ottomaanse Rijk (Nº 38) en van Oost-Azië en Noord-Amerika (Nº 40)
De kaarten van de wereld in de Oudheid (Nº 2 en 3 in beide edities) zijn opnieuw getekend.
Bij sommige kaarten is het kaartbeeld iets verschoven, zoals bij Griekenland, noordelijk deel (Nº 6) en Italië, zuidelijk deel (Nº 11).
Soms zijn bijkaarten verplaatst naar de achterkant van een kaartblad, zoals bij Nº 7 (naar Nº 6b en 7a) en bij Nº 24 (naar Nº 24b)
De volgorde van de laatste 10 kaarten is veranderd.

  This atlas is named after Friedrich Wilhelm Putzger, the author of the first 16 editions (1877-1890). From 1888 Alfred Baldamus was (co-)author, from 1899 in cooperation with Ernst Schwabe. Baldamus was responsible for the maps on the Middle Ages and modern history, Schwabe was concerned with the maps on ancient history.
- Between 1889 and 1913 a more basic historical atlas was also available. Its title was "Velhagen & Klasings Kleiner Geschichtsatlas" and its author Friedrich Wilhelm Putzger. Details can be found in the description of the 3rd edition of that atlas.
- This is the last edition with a 'classic' binding. From the 26th (1902) through the 43rd edition (1922) the atlas has an art nouveau binding. See for example the 35th edition (1911).
Binding
- This copy has a brown calico binding measuring 17.5 × 26 cm (W × H). On the front cover is the title inside a decorative embossed frame; outside the frame the price is mentioned: 2.30 marks for the non-bound edition and 3 marks for the bound edition. The maps are bound folded.
- On the front endpaper some reviews are given, as well as an advertisement for the series of wall maps by Alfred Baldamus. On the rear endpaper is an advertisement for the two versions of the school atlas by R. Lehmann en W. Petzold, also published by Velhagen & Klasing, in the 1897-1912 period.
Contents
- The atlas has a title page with on its verso the names of the printers of the text section (Körner & Sohn, Leipzig) and map section (W. Drugulin, Leipzig). Thereafter are four pages with the table of contents, two pages with the preface, with an extensive acknowledgement, and eight pages of explanatory text.
- The map section contains 40 maps sheets with, according to the title page, 234 main and inset maps. The sheets are numbered 1-40. Often the outside of a sheet has been used for additional maps. Thus sheet 9 has a 'front side' 9a and a 'back side' 9b. Each sheet contains one or more main maps and usually several inset maps. Details can be found in the list of maps, inset maps and scale.
- The first 12 sheets contain maps on ancient history. On the other 28 sheets are maps on the Middle Ages and modern history, with several regional maps of Germany. Some sheets are bound in such a way that two of them can be folded out next to each other, in fact forming a 'double' sheet.
- The maps have been produced in lithography and printed in zincography. This allowed for an easy color printing process in high volume. Area or outline color is used to indicate the political subdivision. In the upper margin name and number of the map are given.
In comparison with b
- From this 25th edition the verso of most maps was used. In such a way many (inset) maps could be added without making the atlas thicker or heavier. See also the preface.
- When comparing the recto of the maps in the 25th and the 24th edition the following differences can be noted.
  - The number of map sheets has increased from 39 to 40. The map of the Ottoman Empire and North America in the 24th edition (Nº 31) has been replaced with two separate maps, of the Ottoman Empire (Nº 38) and of East Asia and North America (Nº 40)
  - The maps of the Ancient world (Nº 2 and 3 in both editions) have been newly drawn.
  - On some maps the map image has shifted slightly, such as Greece, northern part (Nº 6) and Italy, southern part (Nº 11).
  - Some inset maps have been moved to the verso of a sheet, such as on sheet Nº 7 (to Nº 6b and 7a) and Nº 24 (to Nº 14b)
  - The order of the last 10 maps has changed. Sometimes there are different inset maps.
