PREFACE TO THE FOURTH EDITION

Circumstances that neither author nor publisher could control have rendered it impossible to revise this Atlas on a scale such as both would desire, in order to meet the requirements of new methods of instruction no less than to note the vast changes that the map of the world has undergone in recent years. For the present edition the task has been limited mainly to an indication of the territorial consequences of political and military envents since 1914. The author is indebted to Professor Charles H. Haskins, of Harvard University, and to other colleagues for valuable suggestions that he hopes to incorporate more adequately in subsequent editions of the work.
