Deze atlas is niet gedateerd. In de literatuur worden twee uitgaven genoemd, met (geschat) jaartal 1902 en 1906. Deze uitgave heeft op een aantal kaarten – Balkan, Afrika (Libië) – grenzen van 1912 of later. Waarschijnlijk is dit dus een uitgave van 1906 die tot 1912 is bijgewerkt.
In de periode 1923-1931 is de atlas opnieuw verschenen, maar dan met de titel 'Kleinster Schulatlas'; zie ook het overzicht.
Hermann Haack (1872-1966) werkte vanaf 1897 bij Justus Perthes in Gotha. Hij was later onder andere hoofdredacteur van Stielers Hand-Atlas.
Deze atlas is te zien als verkleinde en goedkope versie van Lüddecke-Haack, Deutscher Schulatlas. De Schüler-Atlas (27 kaartbladen; 19,5 × 20,5 cm) kostte 60 pfennig of ingebonden 1 mark. De uitgebreide uitgave van de Deutsche Schulatlas (51 kaartbladen; 26 × 29,5 cm) kostte 3 mark en de kleinere uitgave (33 kaartbladen) 1,60 mark. Deze bedragen zijn ontleend aan Justus Perthes Haupt-Katalog uit 1915.
Bij deze atlas was een oefenatlas te koop, de 'Kleiner deutscher Lern-Atlas'. Daarin staan bijna dezelfde kaarten, maar dan zonder namen. Zie voor de inhoud van beide atlassen de vergelijkende tabel.

Band

De goedkope uitgave van de atlas heeft een roodbruine band van dik papier met afmetingen 19,5 × 20,5 cm (B × H). De band van de 'luxe-uitgave' is van dun karton beplakt met linnen. Op de geïllustreerde voorkant staan titel, naam van de auteur en uitgever. De achterkant is leeg.

Inhoud

De atlas heeft een blad met titel en inhoudsopgave. Verder zijn er 27 bladzijden met kaarten in kleur. Er is geen register. De atlas begint met een sterrenkundige kaart en een blad met kaarten van de halfronden en de poolgebieden. Daarna komen 2 overzichtskaarten van Europa, 12 kaarten van de landen in Europa met de nadruk op Duitsland, 8 van de overige werelddelen, en tenslotte 3 thematische kaarten: volkeren en koloniën, Duitse geschiedenis en Bijbelse geschiedenis.

De kaarten zijn geproduceerd in kleurenlithografie. Het reliëf wordt steeds aangegeven door bruine arcering. Meestal is er een hoogtekleuring maar enkele kaarten zijn staatkundig gekleurd – vooral de deelkaarten van Duitsland en koloniën. De thematische kaarten hebben natuurlijk een passende inkleuring. Bovenaan de kaarten staan naam en nummer van het kaartblad. Onderaan staan een schaalstok, de tekst "Gotha: Justus Perthes" en de schaal (met tussen haakjes een toelichting zoals 2 mm = 15 km). Door het vrij kleine bladformaat is het aantal bijkaarten beperkt; zie ook de lijst van kaarten, bijkaarten en schaal.

Vergelijking met Lüddecke-Haack, Deutscher Schulatlas

Zoals gezegd is deze atlas in zekere zin een verkleinde uitvoering van Lüddecke-Haack, Deutscher Schulatlas. Dat is ook niet helemaal verwonderlijk omdat Hermann Haack auteur van beide atlassen is. Bij 19 van de 27 kaarten uit de kleinere Schüler-Atlas is een overeenkomstige kaart uit de grotere Schulatlas te vinden. De overeenkomst is soms opvallend: alleen de kaart is verkleind en zelfs de plaatsing van de tekst is zowat gelijk. Bij andere kaarten is de overeenkomst minder groot; soms zijn alleen een paar bijkaarten gelijk. Zie ook de pagina met plaatjes van enkele kaarten uit beide atlassen ter vergelijking naast elkaar.

  This atlas is not dated. In the literature two editions are mentioned with estimated years 1902 and 1906. In this edition a few maps – Balkan, Africa (Libya) – show borders from 1912 or later. Therefore I assume this is a 1906 edition that was updated until 1912.
- In the 1923-1931 period the atlas was published again under the slightly altered title 'Kleinster Schulatlas'; see also the overview.
- Hermann Haack (1872-1966) had been working at Perthes from 1897. He also was the editor in chief of Stielers Hand-Atlas.
- This atlas can be considered as a reduced and lower-priced version of Lüddecke-Haack, Deutscher Schulatlas. The Schüler-Atlas (27 map sheets; 19.5 × 20.5 cm) cost 60 pfennig or 1 mark bound in cloth. The comprehensive version of the Deutsche Schulatlas (51 map sheets; 26 × 29.5 cm) cost 3 marks and the concise version (33 map sheets) 1.60 marks. These prices are mentioned in Justus Perthes Haupt-Katalog (1915).
- Also available was an exercise atlas, the 'Kleiner deutscher Lern-Atlas'. It contains almost the same maps, but unlettered. Contents of both atlases can be found in the comparison table.
Binding
- The low-cost version of the atlas has a reddish brown sturdy paper binding measuring 19.5 × 20.5 cm (W × H). The binding of the 'luxury version' is made of thin cardboard pasted with cloth. On the illustrated front cover the title, names of the author and publisher are mentioned. The back cover is empty.
Contents
- The atlas has one page with the title and table of contents. Furthermore there are 27 pages with colored maps. An index is missing. The atlas starts with a map on astronomy and a page with maps of the hemispheres and the Polar Regions. Thereafter are 2 general maps of Europe, 12 maps of the European countries with an emphasis on Germany, 8 of the other continents and in the end 3 thematic maps: nations and colonies, German history and Biblical history.
- The maps have been produced in color lithography. The relief is indicated with brown hachuring. Most maps are colored hypsometrically but some others have political coloring – especially the regional maps of Germany and its colonies. The thematical maps of course have a suitable coloring. In the top margin are the name and number of the map sheet. In the lower margin are a linear scale, the text "Gotha: Justus Perthes" and the scale (in parentheses an explanation such as 2 mm = 15 km). Because of the modest sheet size there are only a few inset maps; see also the list of maps, inset maps and scale.
In comparison with Lüddecke-Haack, Deutscher Schulatlas
- As stated above this atlas is in a sense a reduced version of Lüddecke-Haack, Deutscher Schulatlas. This is not surprising because Hermann Haack is the author of both atlases. For 19 out of the 27 maps in the smaller Schüler-Atlas, a corresponding map in the larger Schulatlas can be found. The ressemblance is sometimes striking: only the map has been reduced and the placement of text is almost identical. For other maps the correspondence is not so obvious; sometimes only a few inset maps are identical.
